1. Expressions in the News: turn a blind eye

4월24일자 사설 <일본의 노골적 우경화 행보를 우려한다>로 표현 익혀보겠습니다. 

“Concern for Japan’s Apparent Move Toward the Right” 

What's more troubling is that it appears this kind of trend towards the right is likely to continue. With the success of "Abenomics," Abe's approval rating has surpassed 70% and his cabinet is certain to be victorious in the House of Councillors this coming July. In addition, the U.S. appears to be turning a blind eye on Japan's rightward inclination because of the more imminent issue of North Korea.

해석)문제는 일본의 이 같은 우경화가 계속될 것 같다는 점이다. ‘아베노믹스’의 성공 덕분에 지지율이 70%를 넘는 아베 내각은 7월 참의원 선거 승리가 확실해 보인다. 여기에 미국의 경우 발등의 불인 북한 때문에 일본 우경화를 묵인하는 듯하다.

*turn a blind eye: 묵인하다, 모르는 척하다

직역하면 보이지 않는 눈이 대상을 향하도록 한다는 뜻으로 의도적으로 모르는 척한다는 뜻입니다. 일반적으로 뒤에 전치사 to 또는 on을 써서 회피하려는 대상을 나타냅니다.

이 표현은 영국의 넬슨 제독 일화에서 기원합니다. 넬슨 제독이 1801년 덴마크와 노르웨이 연합군을 상대로 코펜하겐 해전을 치를 때 영국함대를 이끌었던 파커경과 전술을 놓고 논쟁을 벌였다고 합니다. 파커경이 전투 중 깃발을 통해 퇴각 신호를 보냈는데, 넬슨 제독이 전투에서의 승리를 확신하고 일부러 잘 안 보이는 오른쪽 눈에 망원경을 갖다 대며 “신호를 보지 못했다”는 이유로 명령을 무시하고 싸움을 계속했다고 합니다.

Compare to/with 하면 한국인은 “~와 비교하다”라는 뜻을 떠올립니다. 하지만 이 둘의 용법이 다르다는 것을 아시나요? 오늘은 영어권 사람들도 종종 잘못 사용하는 이 표현을 더 정확하게 소개해봅니다.

*compare to: 다른 두 가지의 유사점을 강조, 비유하다
