부끄러운 우리만의 단어, 날치기 - ram through / gym / work out

국회에서 날치기와 이로 인한 몸싸움은 외국 언론에 보여주기 부끄러운 우리 모습인데요. 날치기는 영어로 뭐라고 할까요?  각종 근력운동 및 유산소 운동기구를 갖춘 공간을 보통 헬스클럽이라고 하는데요. 엄밀한 의미에서 정확한 표현은 따로 있습니다. 선미의 친절한 영어뉴스 열번째 수업, 시작합니다. 

1. Expressions in the News

오늘은 4월15일자 <진주의료원 ‘조례 날치기’ 후폭풍> 기사로 표현 익혀보겠습니다.

Bill on Jinju Medical Center Rammed Through Local Council and Now the Backblast 

The silent security camera footage lasted 32 minutes and 10 seconds, from when the members entered the room until they left. However, if we exclude the time they spent engaging in verbal and physical aggression, it only took them 5 minutes to ram the bill through the committee. 

해석)무성 폐쇄회로TV 화면에는 의원들이 입장하고 퇴장하기까지 32분10초간의 영상이 기록돼 있다. 그러나 이날 입씨름과 몸싸움을 벌인 시간 등을 제외하면 무력으로 안건을 처리한 시간은 불과 5분이다.

영어에는 “날치기”라는 단어가 별도로 없으며, 날치기 통과와 같이 제대로 된 검토나 협의 과정 없이 의도한 결과를 얻기 위해 억지로 안건을 밀어붙인다는 뜻으로 ram through를 사용합니다. Ram through는 법안의 날치기 통과 외에도 물리적으로 어떤 것을 억지로 쑤셔 넣거나 자기 주장을 강제로 관철시키려는 행위 등을 묘사할 때도 사용할 수 있습니다. 우리말에서도 “날치기”라는 말이 사라질 정도로 민주주의가 성숙하기를 오늘도 바라봅니다.

2. 콩글리시 바로잡기 - 요즘 무슨 운동하세요? 헬스란 운동은 없어요!

롤러코스터 같은 날씨에도 불구하고 봄은 오고, 노출의 계절 여름도 다가옵니다. 겨우내 두툼한 옷 속에 고이 숨겨뒀던 뱃살과 허벅지, 팔뚝도 빛을 볼 날이 얼마 남지 않은 요즘 운동을 시작하는 사람들도 많을텐데, 여러분은 어떤 운동을 하시나요? 가장 부담없이 찾는 곳이 동네 곳곳에 있는 헬스장이 아닌가 싶은데, 이때의 “헬스”는 과연 맞는 표현일까요? 외국인에게 취미로 “헬스”를 한다고 말하면, 그 사람은 무슨 생각을 할까요? 분명 취미가 “건강”이라고 생각할 것이며, 건강은 취미로 할 수 있는 활동이 아니기 때문에 아마도 “건강에 관심이 많다”는 말을 조금 어눌하게 표현했다고 생각하고 넘어갈 것입니다.

“헬스”는 health club의 줄임말입니다. Health club은 요즘 한국에도 많이 생긴 복합 운동 공간입니다. 근력운동 및 유산소운동을 할 수 있는 각종 기구들을 갖춘 공간과 에어로빅이나 요가 강습을 할 수 있는 단체 운동 공간, 그리고 때로는 수영장, 스쿼시장, 스파까지 갖춘 공간을 health club 또는 fitness club, fitness center라고 합니다. Health club(fitness club)이란 말 그대로 건강을 위해 여러 가지 활동을 할 수 있는 공간인 샘이죠. 

근력운동 및 유산소운동을 위한 기계와 아령 등만을 갖춘 곳도 health club이라고 할 수 있지만, 일반적으로 *gym이라는 표현을 더 많이 사용합니다.

또 health라는 운동은 존재하지 않습니다. 만약 이런 헬스클럽에 가서 운동을 하고 있다면 “work out* in a gym/health club”라고 하면 됩니다. * work out: 운동하다
