생각이 짧으면 몸이 고생합니다. 표현이 짧으면 글이 단조로워집니다. 생각하다는 뜻의 영단어 think만 있는 게 아니라니깐요. 짜릿한 승리, 역전승은 영어로 어떻게 표현할까요. 선미의 친절한 영어뉴스 17번째 수업 시작합니다.

오늘은 2012년 8월29일자 <애플이 삼성에 묻다> 기사로 표현익혀보겠습니다.

Apple Poses a Question to Samsung

And in the end they turned the tables on Apple. Apple did not let it pass; it filed lawsuits all around the world. Apple does not call Samsung a fast follower, but instead calls it a copycat. A copycat is a word that looks down on people who imitate others, and to a company it's almost profanity.

해석)그러다 나중엔 아예 역전시켜버렸다. 애플은 그냥 넘어가지 않고 전 세계에서 소송을 걸었다. 애플은 삼성전자를 패스트팔로어가 아닌 ‘카피캣(copycat)’으로 부른다. 카피캣은 ‘따라쟁이’를 뜻하는 비난조의 말로, 기업엔 욕설에 가까운 용어다.

*turn the tables: (상황을) 역전시키다 / * turn the tables on A: A를 앞서다, 역지사지

우리 나라에는 윷놀이가 있다면 서양에는 backgammon이라고 하는 2인용 보드게임이 있습니다. 두 사람은 서로 반대쪽에서 출발하여 여러 가지 전략을 써서 상대방의 출발지까지 말을 옮기는데, 모든 말을 먼저 옮기는 사람이 이기게 됩니다. Table 또는 게임 판을 돌려 나와 상대방의 입장을 바꾸던 이 게임 방법에서 오늘날의 표현이 유래했다고 합니다.

2. 그때 그때 달라요 - 생각하다, think만 있는 게 아니라니깐요!

Think는 인간이 뇌로 할 수 있는 모든 종류의 사고를 포괄하는 동사입니다. 영어에서는 보통 짧고 쉬운 단어들이 이렇게 광범위하게 쓰이는데, 이런 단어들을 너무 자주 반복하다 보면 글이 유치하게 느껴질 수 있습니다. 그래서 상황이나 의도에 따라 더 구체적인 단어들로 대체하게 되는데, 오늘은 think 대신 쓸 수 있는 몇 가지 단어들을 소개해봅니다.

*consider: 고려하다, 숙고하다

-Perhaps Ms. Kellaway might consider a second survey on the value of those who scored a 2:2 or—heaven forbid—even worse. (Financial Times)

-Earlier this year, an administrative law judge ruled that state law didn’t require regulators to consider the possible impact on the San Pedro River when they gave water-supply clearance to the development. (San Francisco Chronicle)

-Consider that cultural beliefs about the function of public schools to socialize children and youth into the dominant civic and social values (e.g., honesty, respect for others’ values, cooperating) are anchored in age-graded school structures. (The Washington Post)

*ponder: 곰곰이 생각하다 (consider 보다는 더 신중하고 꼼꼼하게)

-Eventually, as Weber pondered life after Illinois, faith replaced doubt. (Chicago Tribune)

-The U.S. executive is pondering allowing exports of crude. (The Wall Street Journal)

-For outside powers pondering what, if anything, they might do, the killings add to the argument for more active intervention. (The Economist)

*contemplate: 주의 깊게 살펴보다, 오랫동안 생각하다, 가능성을 생각하다 (정도는 ponder과 비슷하지만, 가능성을 살핀다는 뜻은 contemplate에만 내포되어 있습니다.)

-It’s in that spirit that we should contemplate last week’s burst of polling on the 2016 presidential campaign. (Los Angeles Times)

-He reveals that Denis Thatcher, whom she married in 1951, once repaired to South Africa for two months and contemplated divorcing her. (The Economist)
