액면가는 액면가다 - face value / sound / noise

따스한 봄바람이 두 뺨을 간지르며 낮잠을 재촉하네요. 오늘 배울 표현들은 그리 어렵지 않습니다. 조금만 생각하면 맞출 수 있는 문제들이거든요. 액면가를 영어로 뭐라고 하는지, sound와 noise의 차이점이 뭔지 알아보겠습니다. 


1. Expressions in the News

4월25일자 칼럼 <조하르 두다예프의 기억>으로 표현 익혀보겠습니다.

If we take him at face value, the motive behind the terrorist acts of these "lonely wolves" is related to moral rage. The United States is a hypocritical country. They never discovered the weapons of mass destruction, which they touted as the reason for their invasion of Iraq, but they never officially apologized for this or for the countless innocent lives which were sacrificed. 

해석)액면대로 받아들이면 외로운 늑대들의 테러 동기가 도덕적 분노와 관련 있었다는 말이 된다. 미국은 위선적 국가다. 이라크 침공 명분으로 선전한 대량살상무기(WMD) 나오지 않았지만 점에 대해, 무고한 인명들이 수없이 희생된 대해 공식적으로 사과한 적이 없다.


*face value: 액면(), 지폐나 우표 등에 명시된 가치

* take someone/thing at face value: 액면대로 받아들이다, 곧이곧대로 받아들이다

-The discount rates reflect that the bills sell for less than face value. (The Washington Post)

2. 그때 그때 달라요 - sound noise

소리라고 같은 소리는 아니죠. 음악처럼 우리가 찾아 듣는 소리가 있는가 하면, 때로는 귀를 틀어막고 싶을 정도로 듣기 싫은 소리가 있습니다. 한국어로는 부연 설명을 붙여 소리를 구분하지만, 영어에서는 소리라는 단어를 통해 이미 소리가 환영 받는지 그렇지 못한지 암시합니다. 일반적으로 *sound 듣기 좋은 소리, 음악과 관련된 소리를 의미하며 *noise 귀에 거슬리는 소리나 잡음, 소란을 뜻합니다.
