액면가는 액면가다 - face value / sound / noise

따스한 봄바람이 두 뺨을 간지르며 낮잠을 재촉하네요. 오늘 배울 표현들은 그리 어렵지 않습니다. 조금만 생각하면 맞출 수 있는 문제들이거든요. 액면가를 영어로 뭐라고 하는지, sound와 noise의 차이점이 뭔지 알아보겠습니다.

해석)액면대로 받아들이면 이 ‘외로운 늑대’들의 테러 동기가 도덕적 분노와 관련 있었다는 말이 된다. 미국은 위선적 국가다. 이라크 침공 명분으로 선전한 대량살상무기(WMD)가 나오지 않았지만 이 점에 대해, 또 무고한 인명들이 수없이 희생된 데 대해 공식적으로 사과한 적이 없다.

*face value: 액면(가), 지폐나 우표 등에 명시된 가치

* take someone/thing at face value: 액면대로 받아들이다, 곧이곧대로 받아들이다

2. 그때 그때 달라요 - sound와 noise

소리라고 다 같은 소리는 아니죠. 음악처럼 우리가 찾아 듣는 소리가 있는가 하면, 때로는 귀를 틀어막고 싶을 정도로 듣기 싫은 소리가 있습니다. 한국어로는 부연 설명을 붙여 그 소리를 구분하지만, 영어에서는 ‘소리’라는 단어를 통해 이미 그 소리가 환영 받는지 그렇지 못한지 암시합니다. 일반적으로 *sound는 듣기 좋은 소리, 음악과 관련된 소리를 의미하며 *noise는 귀에 거슬리는 소리나 잡음, 소란을 뜻합니다.
