솜방망이 처벌, 직역하면 낭패! - punishment with a cotton bat?

* brinkmanship: 극단적인 위협 (brink: 벼랑 끝 + -manship: 기량, 특징)

극한 상황으로 상대방을 위협하여 원하는 결과를 유도하려는 전략, 한 마디로 “너 죽고 나 죽자”고 덤비는 전략입니다. 팽팽한 긴장감이 감돌던 냉전체제 하에서 탄생한 단어로 오늘 날 북한의 핵전쟁 위협, 그 이전에는 냉전체제 하에서의 쿠바사태 등이 대표적인 brinkmanship의 행태입니다.

2. 콩글리시 바로잡기 - 솜방망이 처벌, 직역하면 낭패!

솜방망이 처벌 = punishment with a cotton bat?

잘못을 했더라도, 처벌이 그 잘못에 합당하지 못하고 오히려 더 약할 경우 우리는 이를 “솜방망이 처벌”이라고 합니다. 솜방망이로 아무리 맞아도 크게 아프지 않기에 생긴 표현이겠지요. 솜방망이를 영어로는 cotton bat라고 할 수 있을 것입니다. 하지만 cotton bat라는 것은 영어에는 존재하지 않는 개념입니다. 그렇다면 영어로는 죄에 비해 약한 처벌을 뭐라고 할까요?

*a slap on the wrist: 직역하면 ‘손목을 치다’지만, 약한 처벌을 뜻합니다.(아이가 엄마 몰래 과자를 먹으려고 과자통에 손을 넣다 들켜서, 엄마가 아이의 손목을 치며 손을 빼라고 하는 모습을 연상해보세요.)
