그때 그때 다른 "찾았다" find or look for or search?

여러분은 영어공부를 해야만 하는 의미, 잘 찾고 있나요? 찾는 것도 찾았느냐 결국엔 못 찾았느냐, 어떤 물건을 찾느냐 가치를 추구하는 것이냐에 따라 표현이 달라집니다. 오늘 배울 영어뉴스 속 표현은 'hermit state'(폐쇄국가)입니다.  

1. Expressions in the News

오늘은 3월25일자 <북 국지도발 때 조건에 맞으면 미군의 자동 개입> 기사로 표현 익혀보겠습니다.  

“U.S. Military Will Intervene under Certain Conditions Following North Korean Provocation”

According to an operation plan recently signed by the ROK and US military, the U.S. military will join the South Korean forces in launching an attack on North Korea, if the hermit state ventures on "local" provocations such as the shelling of Yeonpyeong Island in November 2010. 

해석) 북한이 2010년 11월 연평도 포격 도발과 같은 국지도발을 다시 감행할 경우 한국군과 미군이 함께 응징한다는 작전계획이 발효됐다.

* hermit: 은둔자    * state: 국가, 상태

- hermit state: 폐쇄된 국가, 조직, 사회 등을 hermit kingdom이라고 지칭합니다. 특히 쇄국정책을 펼쳤던 조선말기가 대표적인 hermit kingdom입니다. State는 국가를 뜻하기 때문에 hermit state는 그 중에서도 폐쇄적인 국가를 뜻하며, 그 대표적인 예가 북한입니다. 위 예시에서처럼 나라 이름을 사전에 언급했을 경우, 그 이름을 대신해서 쓸 수도 있습니다.

2. 그때 그때 달라요 - 찾았다!

“찾았다”는 무언가를 찾기 위해 과거에 노력했다(찾았으나 못 찾았다)는 뜻도 되고 찾고자 한 물건을 발견했다(찾았다!)는 결과를 의미하기도 합니다. 하지만 영어에서는 찾고자 한 물건을 찾았는지 그 여부에 따라 사용하는 동사가 달라집니다.

* find: 발견하다 (찾아서 발견한 것, 우연히 발견한 것 모두 가능)

-The violin played by the leader of the band on board the Titanic as the world’s greatest ocean liner slipped beneath the icy waves of the north Atlantic has been found in an attic in the East Riding of Yorkshire. (The Times)

-They found the naked, malnourished 4-year-old boy in an overheated apartment where he had been trapped for days with the decomposing body of his mother, a bag of sugar his only source of food. (The Washington Post)

* look for: 찾다 (찾고자 한 것을 발견하기 전까지 행하는 노력, 즉 찾기 전까지의 찾다. 그렇기 때문에 찾고자 한 것을 발견했는지 못했는지는 알 수 없습니다.)

-If investors were looking for clarity on the heated fight between Canadian fertilizer giant Agrium Inc. and Jana Partners this week, they were likely disappointed. (The Wall Street Journal)

-“If you don’t find what you are looking for you start at the beginning,” (Chicago Tribune)

위 문장을 한글로 번역해보면 왜 한국 사람들이 find와 look for을 헷갈려 할 수밖에 없는지 알 수 있습니다. “네가 찾고자 하는 것을 찾지 못하면, 처음부터 다시 시작해라.”

*search: 검색하다, 뒤지다 (뭔가 많은 것 속에서 찾고자 하는 것을 찾는 행위, 예: 정보의 홍수 속에서 원하는 정보 찾기, 동네에 있는 무수한 집들 중에 방문하려는 집 찾기, 범죄 현장에서 단서 찾기 등)

-Hundreds of armed vigilantes have taken control of a town on a major highway in the Pacific coast state of Guerrero, arresting local police officers and searching homes after one of their leaders was killed. (The Guardian)

-His campaign has officially begun its search, and Romney has taken some contenders with him on the campaign trail. (Los Angeles Times)

*seek: 구하다, 추구하다 (원하는 것을 구하기 위해 찾는 행위를 지칭할 때는 look for과 비슷하며 대체 가능)

-Russians have sought assets that stick around a little longer. (The Guardian)

-Those billions will be seeking food, water and other resources on a planet where, scientists say, humans are already shaping climate and the web of life. (The New York Times)
