Ahn Sang-soo must step down as party chairman !
The ruling Grand National Party(Hannara Party) chairman Ahn Sang-soo has apologized for his comments, and he has returned to his daily political life as if nothing happened. As he didn't say he would resign as party head, one could say this is natural.
We, however, cannot help but ask, "So this means now, Ahn and the GNP can engage in politics well?" The inappropriate comment mentioned by Ahn was probably the joke about "naturals at the room salon."
If it were just this one utterance, his reflection and apology could be an appropriate solution. It is cruel for a politician to have to endure political failure over just one mistake. Saying that Ahn should resign as GNP head just over the "naturals at a room salon" comment could be said to be not only unfair, but also an excessive political attack.
Ahn and GNP must understand why calls for Ahn's resignation surfaced, however. They should think carefully whether this is because of just one inappropriate joke. Ahn is typical of politicians who view opposition forces as hostile forces with which they cannot coexist.
He has without hesitation attacked critics of the Lee Myung-bak administration as leftists. Whether it's a correct ideological evaluation or not, the term leftist in Korean politics is a rhetorical devise that means you do not acknowledge the political opposition, and necessarily means that you regard the opposition not as a partner for dialogue and negotiations but as something to be destroyed.
In fact, it is not longer necessary to mention what kind of relationship the Lee administration has with the opposition and critical forces. Nevertheless, to cite one example, there's the Dec 8 trampling of the National Assembly, in which the budget was railroaded through. It was an incident that makes a show of the political style of politicians like Ahn, but in fact, it was the usual form of political activity for such people.
Symbolized by Ahn, the GNP's politics have been "hitman politics" and "shock troop politics" of taking care of Cheong Wa Dae directions while being prepared to absorb all sorts of criticism in the process. We are not going to claim that Ahn had absolutely no intention to correct those mistakes.
When he was elected as party leader, he stressed dialogue, and mentioned normalizing relations between the party and Cheong Wa Dae. It seems even he knew that the party needed to respond somehow to desires for change.
He tried to the extent of writing down in his diary "Be careful of what you say," as if to memorize this demand. But in fact, his words and actions did not change. It does not seem he's a person who can change, no matter how hard he works at it.
We've gone beyond the stage at which his problems can be resolved by making a fuss like he was tripped up by a little mistake. Despite this, does the GNP believe that Ahn can conduct politics well in the future if he doesn't make verbal gaffes? The time has come for the GNP to stop expecting things from Ahn.
