The top U.S. military officer said Wednesday that the U.S. commitment to helping South Korea defend itself from North Korean aggression is "unquestioned."

Navy Adm. Mike Mullen, the U.S. chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, warned that North Korea should not mistake South Korean restraint as a lack of resolve. "Nor should they interpret it as willingness to accept continued attacks," Mullen said.

Mullen called a North Korean artillery attack last month that killed four South Koreans "unprovoked." He also pressed a reluctant China to use its influence to rein in its ally Pyongyang.

Mullen said China appeared unwilling to use its enormous influence over the North to push Pyongyang to change its ways.

Mullen vowed to hold more joint drills with South Korea to deter any North Korean aggression. South Korea and the United States staged drills last week off the west coast of the peninsula in response to North Korea's Nov. 23 artillery barrage on a South Korean island near the Koreas' disputed sea border.

The drills "sent a strong signal of our intent to deter future acts of aggression. We must do more ... together," Mullen said in a joint news conference with his South Korean counterpart, Gen. Han Min-koo.

미군 고위 인사가 수요일 미국은 한국이 북한 공격으로부터 스스로를 보호할 수 있도록 돕는다는 미국의 약속에는 의문의 여지가 없다고 말했다.

마이크 멀린 미 합참의장은 북한이 한국의 자제력을 결의가 약한 것으로 오해해서는 안된다고 경고했다. 또 추가적인 도발을 허용하겠다는 의지로 해석해서도 안된다고 멀린 의장은 말했다.

멀린 의장은 4명의 한국인을 죽인 북한의 지난달 폭격을 정당한 이유가 없다고 말했다. 그는 또 (영향력 행사를) 꺼려하는 중국을 동맹인 평양을 억제하기 위해 그 영향력을 행사하라며 압박했다.

멀린 의장은 중국이 북한이 자신들의 방식을 바꾸도록 밀어부치기 위해 북한에 큰 영향력을 행사할 의지가 없는 것으로 보인다고 말했다.

멀린 의장은 한국에 대한 북한의 공격을 억제하기 위해 한국과 더 많은 합동 훈련을 열기를 약속했다. 한국과 미국은 지난 11월 23일 북한이 논란이 되고 있는 해안 경계선 근처의 한국 섬에 대한 포격 세례(야포사격)에 대한 대응으로 반도의 서해안에서 훈련을 개최했다.

멀린 의장은 "훈련은 추후 공격 행위를 저지하기 위한 우리의 의도에 대해 강력한 신호를 보냈다. 우리는 함께 더 해야만 한다"고 한국측 카운터파트인 한민구 합창의장과의 공동기자회견에서 말했다.
